In early May, a vote was held to rename Zaslonova Street in Kyiv in honor of the fighter for Ukrainian Crimea, former political prisoner, and soldier who died in battle—Hennadii Afanasiev!
The voting took place online on the "Kyiv Digital" application platform and concluded on May 12th.
A total of 16,991 Kyiv residents participated in the survey. 41% of respondents voted to rename Zaslonova Street in honor of Hennadii Afanasiev. Other options received the following votes: in honor of writer and playwright Karpenko-Kary - 21%, Starodarnytska - 12%, Heroes of Darnytsia - 9%, Crimean Tatar political and state figure Noman Çelebicihan - 6%, Prince of Rus from the Rurik dynasty, King Yaropolk - 5%. Other options received less than 3% of the votes.
Hennadii Afanasiev dedicated his entire life to the struggle for Ukrainian Crimea. He was a political prisoner of the Kremlin, spending 767 days in captivity. He volunteered to go to the front and became a senior soldier in the 241st Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine—defending the Kyiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions from the Russian invasion. On December 18, 2022, he was killed in battle near the village of Bilohorivka in Luhansk region.
Now we await the decision of the city authorities. We thank all participants for their involvement and respect for the memory of a great fighter for Ukraine who was unjustly imprisoned by Russian authorities.
