On the morning of February 9, 2022, Russian security forces searched the houses of Crimean Tatars in several areas of the temporarily occupied Crimea. As a result of the raids, they detained four people, including Ametkhan Abdulvapov, a resident of the village of Bile.
On the same day, a measure of restraint in the form of detention in the Simferopol pre-trial detention center was chosen for Ametkhan. Ametkhan Abdulvapov is charged with "participation in a terrorist organization" under Part 2 of Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code of Russia.
All the detainees are accused of membership in the Islamic political party "Hizb ut-Tahrir" forbidden in Russia since 2003 but is legally operating throughout Ukraine, including the temporarily occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
The case materials contain audio recordings with the convicts discussing religious and political topics. This was the only evidence that they had committed a terrorist crime.
At the court session on November 9, Abdulvapov’s lawyer Refat Yunus suggested the Chairman of the board of the Southern District Military Court Ihor Kostin to interrogate his client with the help of a polygraph. The prosecution and the court were surprised by this proposal and yet refused the defense to use any technical means.
